Charles George Veterans Affairs Medical Center Selects Halogen Software for Talent Management and Competency Assessment

Award Winning Solution to help improve patient care, increase employee engagement and meet compliance requirements

Ottawa, ON – January 20, 2011 – Charles George Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center has selected Halogen Software to support its talent management and competency assessment needs. The Asheville, North Carolina Medical Center will use award-winning Halogen eAppraisal™ Healthcare to roll out online performance appraisals and competency assessments. The goals for the project are to help improve patient care through timely assessment of the current skills base, increase employee engagement and address healthcare compliance requirements.

The medical center, which delivers a wide range of services to more than 300,000 veterans in the area, has to address compliance with Joint Commission and MAGNET®, as well as federal government directives. Until recently, the organization was managing competency assessment with a paper-based process which was time consuming and made it challenging to ensure reporting was complete and easily accessible for compliance audits. An automated solution for competency assessment was identified as a strategic enabler in addressing compliance, and in supporting higher levels of employee engagement and patient care.

“We clearly saw the benefit of implementing Halogen eAppraisal Healthcare for our competency assessment needs – their solution is widely considered the de facto standard for our industry. But our key driver was to ensure that we could easily conduct our competency assessments online to meet our compliance requirements,” explained the Chief of Learning Resources at Charles George VA Medical Center. “Halogen was the only vendor that could easily address our competency assessment needs. Their track record makes us confident that our employees, managers and the organization overall will get added value out of the process.”

With its new approach to competency assessments, the organization expects to be able to streamline the process and provide fingertip access to reports required for continued quality improvements, Joint Commission and journey to MAGNET status. An added benefit of the online competency assessment is that employees will play a very active role in ensuring their own competencies are up-to-date, which contributes to shared governance within the organization.

“We expect our competency assessment program to positively impact patient care as part of our sustained effort to ensure continued high quality of care. We will be able to quickly and easily identify areas of skills concern as they arise in the process which directly improves our level of patient care. We can ensure our employees have the most up-to-date skills and knowledge needed to serve our patients,” said the Chief of Learning Resources.

As a healthcare organization funded by the federal government, Charles George VA Medical Center must comply with government directives as they are announced. The automated competency assessment program is designed to help organizations be more agile in getting information to all of their employees on changes to directives that may impact competencies and ensure timely compliance. Additionally, automating competency assessments will help the Center eliminate paper, and save on related administrative costs, which is in line with federal government initiatives.

The American Hospital Association (AHA) has identified and exclusively endorsed Halogen eAppraisal Healthcare as its employee performance and talent management solution of choice for member hospitals and healthcare organizations across the United States. More than 700 healthcare facilities across North America currently rely on Halogen.
