Well, we might have to. The odds say we do. The fact is, nearly two-thirds of companies have either a poorly defined learning technology strategy, or none at all. That’s according to the Brandon Hall Group’s 2017 Learning Technology Study.
David Wentworth, Principal Learning Analyst for Brandon Hall recently shared these findings and more with Training Magazine. The takeaway: People are dissatisfied with their LMS and poor planning is to blame. David’s delivering a webinar on October 4th, “R.I.P. Outdated LMS” to share advice for organizations that want to take a modern approach to learning with technology.
Learning management systems are complex, not always user-friendly and can be difficult to integrate with other parts of your learning strategy. But it doesn’t have to be this way.
In his Training Magazine piece, Wentworth gives three main takeaways from the 2017 Learning Technology Study.
- Learning technology is getting more complex, and that’s not going to change
- Great user experience and integration with other systems are critical features in an LMS
- A solid, strategic LMS selection process is crucial
All three of these takeaways can be boiled down to one conclusion: Learning technology needs a plan.
And “let’s buy an LMS, some content, and push it out” does not a great learning technology plan make.
So, what does a great learning technology plan look like? Well, there’s no simple answer to that question. Every organization has different learning needs. Some might need to fill in some skill gaps while others might have very strict compliance guidelines to keep.
Instead of writing out a plan for you, here are two key questions to consider when figuring out what your LMS game plan should be.
What are your organization’s learning and development goals?
Before determining how we’re going to get there, we need to know where we’re going. It seems obvious, but this is a step that many organizations skip or don’t give enough time and attention to. Think long term, and not just about the immediate needs.
You don’t determine your entire strategy based on that compliance thing you need done ASAP. Rather, you want a system that will grow with your organization and fill your future needs as well.
What learning technologies will you be deploying?
The LMS is still the central piece of any learning technology strategy, but new and exciting solutions are gaining popularity. Depending on the learning goals you’ve set for the organization, different methods will work better than others.
For example, if you’re taking a self-directed learning approach, gamification might work well since it helps motivate employees to be proactive about their learning. This is where being forward-looking with your goals will come in handy.
You’ll need to make sure you’re looking for a solution that will integrate with all the technologies you currently use, plan to use soon, or might use in the future.
Oh, and make sure you have the means to measure success.
