Talent is on the Move According to New Employee Outlook Survey

We are excited to announce that the results of Employee Outlook survey conducted by the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development (CIPD), in partnership with Halogen Software, are now available.

The survey results reveal some interesting findings in employee sentiment and mobility that reinforce the importance of talent management and employee engagement in the UK. Here are some of the highlights:

  • About one quarter of employees indicated that they are looking for a new job;
  • 62 percent of dissatisfied workers are looking for a job compared with only 10 percent of satisfied employees;
  • 71 percent of disengaged workers are job searching as opposed to just 9 percent of engaged workers; and
  • More than 3 in 5 employees said that an opportunity to progress is important to them, but only 1 in 4 employees said that they’d had a performance review at work.

Another key finding is that while over half of the employees surveyed indicated they had had a performance review within the last six months (33 percent), 27 percent of employees surveyed indicated they had never had a performance review:

Claire McCartney, Research Adviser at the CIPD, and author of the Employee Outlook report shared this insight into what the findings mean:

“Talent is on the move again, signalling a decline in fear around job security as the impact of the economic downturn begins to lessen. However, this should also signal a warning to employers to up their game when it comes to retaining key talent – if they aren’t monitoring their employees’ progression and providing opportunities to talk about career development, they may well risk losing some of their most talented workers, who might well vote with their feet and take advantage of a somewhat improved labour market outlook. The private sector is particularly at risk of this, where there has been a steady decline in employees’ job satisfaction.

While the number of employees currently looking for work may not be totally surprising given the improving economic climate, it certainly is a striking reminder of the importance of good talent management practices.

UK organisations that want to keep top talent need to assess how well their talent management programs are addressing employee needs and the needs of the organization.
