Our 5 Favorite Human Resources Podcasts

Talk radio is having a renaissance! Podcasts are one of our favorite ways to learn about the latest and greatest in news, pop culture, technology, sports, and even talent management! That’s right, not all podcasts are comedians conducting interviews, real-life murder mysteries, or picks for the week’s football games.

As it turns out, some of the smartest people in HR and from the business world are podcasting about managing talent and performance. Here are a few of our favorite HR podcasts we’ve heard in the last little while.

Pinkcast - Why You Should Write A Failure Resume

Let’s start off short and sweet. At just 124 seconds, this episode of Daniel Pink’s podcast talks about the personal exercise of keeping a “failure resume” with Stanford professor Tina Seelig. We really love this idea! After all, you can’t learn from your mistakes unless you reflect on them.

The McKinsey Podcast – Going From Fragile to Agile

There’s a good chance you’re familiar with McKinsey, the multinational management consulting firm and publishers of McKinsey Quarterly. What you may not know is that they also publish a podcast featuring conversations with experts on all things management, organizational theory, and strategy. We like this episode in particular, which dives deep into why companies need to become speedier and more agile (as the kids say it these days), but while doing something a lot of business analysts don’t talk about: maintain stability.

StartUp – Shadowed Qualities

Break out the tissues for this one, it gets a little emotional. If you haven’t listened to StartUp yet, I’ll set some context. Alex Blumberg, a former NPR producer and host of some popular shows, decided to start a podcasting company. His first podcast: the story of how he started his podcasting company. It’s all very meta. That was nearly three years ago and the company has since grown in staff, shows produced, and added a lot of stress for the company’s founder.

In this episode, Alex receives his first 360-degree, or multirater performance review. It really shows how hard it can be to get critical feedback from your peers, but how important it can be for improving the way we work to ensure we’re our best selves.

Harvard Business Review Ideacast - Building Emotional Agility

HBR puts out great articles, but they have a great podcast too! The HBR Ideacast really runs the gamut when it comes to business knowledge. Episodes cover organizational strategy, consumer psychology, productivity, media, trends, and just about everything in between.

This episode features Susan David, author of Emotional Agility and psychologist at Harvard Medical school. The concept of emotional intelligence is all about the ability to slow down in our thinking and create the space we need to insert our values into everything we do.

HR Happy Hour – What Is Talent Mobility And Why Does It Matter?

This podcast from Steve Boese, the mind behind the HR Technology Conference, is part of a series called “We’re Only Human with Ben Eubanks.” Ben is an HR analyst, blogger, and all-around smart guy. In this episode, Ben talks about how internal talent mobility can help solve the ever-present “Why won’t millennials stay put?” problem.
