How Do You Feel About Work? #MyJobAsASongTitle

Everyone feels a little bit differently about their job. Some people love what they do, the people they work with and the culture they’re a part of.

For other people, not so much.

We wanted to know how you all feel about work. So we asked you to describe your feelings in song. We sponsored a hashtag game with our friends at Hashtag Roundup, called #MyJobAsASongTitle. The premise was simple: describe your work life using a song title. And we learned a lot.

Some of you seem to really love what you do.

Some of you have some very clever ways of describing what you do

But most of you seem a little disengaged

So what can we learn from this?

Well, for one, this anecdotal look into how people feel at work lines up with the data. According to Gallup, only 15% of employees worldwide are engaged at work. That means 85% of people dislike their job, or often, their manager.

This should serve as a warning sign for organizations around the world that their people need to become a higher priority. Employee engagement is hugely beneficial to employee productivity and retention, but isn't always given its due as a proper business metric

Want a simple way to start?

  • Stop thinking about engagement in terms of a survey result and more as a result of great management.
  • Stop thinking about engagement in terms of free pizza lunches and starting thinking about it in terms of more regular communication between employees and managers.
  • Stop thinking about engagement as something your work on here and there and start thinking of it as an ongoing process.
  • Stop thinking about engagement as a target to hit “because you should” and start thinking of it as a true business benefit to productivity and retention.
