Create a “Pull” Learning Culture With Content Curation

As the move from “pushing” employees to training content is replaced with better-curated content that the end user wants to “pull” from, companies are increasingly looking to improve their offerings. One way to do that is through intentional content curation.

At a recent Saba Summer Series webinar, “From Push to Pull – A New Approach to Learning and Content Curation,” we learned how to enhance the employee experience with the end goal of making content engaging, relevant and relatable. 

During the webinar, OpenSesame’s Brittany McClain, Market Development Manager, taught us the “Connect the Dots” method for content: Discover. Organize. Tag. Share.

Discover: Finding content

This is the first step in building a solid content library. Where do you go to discover content in your organization? Possible answers could be subject matter experts; marketing and content teams; industry experts and third-party training creators.

Organize: Arranging content systematically

Next, walk in your employees’ footsteps. Where do they go to get content? Is the process intuitive? If finding training content is difficult, employees will quickly give up. Take steps to organize your content. Remove poorly designed courses or printed material with mistakes. Employees will be quick to sniff out sub-par content.

Tag: Categorizing and grouping content

This is a time-consuming task, but we assure you it’s worth it. Tag content in your LMS with important info such as the course level (beginner, expert). Use keywords that will help with search. Consider adding location information that will further refine the learning environment. Other possible tags: mobile friendly, departmental compliance, group-specific tags.

Sharing: Promoting and distributing content 

If you’ve curated correctly, your organization’s content is top notch, so get it out there! To create a “pull” culture where employees return to your content, let them know it exists. You can do this with social media, internal blogs, quick summary emails (include a video from an executive for best impact!). Try in-person ideas such as table cards for the lunchroom; posters; desk drops; and lunches/snack breaks hosted by the learning team.

With some intentional steps and dedication to curating great content, you’ll be well on the way to creating a “pull” learning culture where employees value their learning content and return again and again.
