Employee performance evaluations

The employee performance evaluation is one of the key responsibilities of a supervisor or manager and key to an employee's career development. The employee performance evaluation is an invaluable tool for recognizing the performance of top performers, for providing redirection to employees who may not be performing to the organization's expectations, and for taking steps to deal with a difficult or challenging employee.

Why do employee performance evaluations
Performance evaluations are designed to measure the extent to which an employee's performance meets the requirements of a position and to establish goals for the future. Specific reasons for conducting employee performance evaluations include the following:

  • Providing employees with honest, relevant, and timely feedback from their supervisors to help them know what they are doing well and what needs to be changed or corrected, and the consequences of their performance
  • Top performers and self motivated achievers will grow increasingly frustrated and disenfranchised if there are no perceived differences between their performance and the performance of mediocre performers
  • An employee performance evaluation enables the supervisor and employee to discuss individual performance goals and the overall direction of the team or organization
  • Performance evaluations can be invaluable tools for assessing the organization's training and staff development requirements
  • Performance evaluations are a first step in identifying and correcting problematic performance

What to evaluate?
Key aspects of a successful evaluation are: identifying job standards, being consistent in measuring and communicating the extent to which those standards are being met; and providing opportunities for feedback and clarification. Attributes that are assessed in an employee performance evaluation will depend on the type of organization and the type of position. For example, a performance evaluation for support staff might include:

  • Knowledge of work - how well does the employee know his or her job?
  • Quantity of work - is the employees output consistent with the requirements of the job?
  • Quality of work - how accurate or error free is the employee's work? Do they take pride in their work?
  • Initiative - does the employee proactively seek out new assignments and responsibilities?
  • Dependability - how reliable is the employee?
  • Attendance - does the employee arrive on time for work and meetings?

Automating the process
Web-based systems can automate every aspect of the employee evaluation and appraisal process within an organization including getting the right documents to right people at the right time. Effective web-based systems can be up and running in a matter of days and acclimatize to an organization quickly with a simple, intuitive User Interface. Desirable characteristics of a web-based system also include the ability to support:

  • various types of employee evaluations – focal, anniversary, interim, and probationary
  • multiple appraisal and evaluation processes at the same time
  • complex scoring and weighting
