Motivation is the force that converts intention into action. In a work setting, it is the drive that helps maintain goal-directed performance. For over 40 years, scientists and business researchers have conducted numerous studies to determine what incentives help motivate employees. So many companies spend thousands of dollars hiring outside firms to give motivation seminars, realizing that by nurturing the talent of individuals and building stronger teams, they can help cultivate a happy work environment.

Last week, Roslyn Courtney, an award-winning expert on leadership, business change and talent management, announced the results of her survey on leadership and careers in a business world that is radically changing. Courtney surveyed 320 leaders and managers and conducted in-depth interviews. The survey looked at the use of talent, innovation and more, with some interesting results.

Last week we announced that we are working with St. Louis-based St. Anthony’s Medical Center on their strategic talent management programs. What’s cool about this is how they are using our solutions to support their leadership excellence programs and to drive outstanding patient care. Especially when you consider that a recent Aberdeen Group benchmark study of more than 150 healthcare organizations in the United States cited performance management, succession planning and engagement as the highest priority areas in the healthcare market.

Bersin’s Been Busy!

Our friends at Bersin & Associates have been really busy with new research reports – and surveys!

Of particular interest is their recently published High-Impact Succession Management: Best Practices, Models and Case Studies in Organizational Talent Mobility, a study that finds a majority of companies implement succession management practices at only the most senior executive levels. Fewer than 40% of respondents said their companies included mid-level managers and skilled professionals in succession planning initiatives and only 11% included first-line supervisors.

In recent months, this blog has included a lot on the need for talent management and leadership in the current economic downturn, so when I saw an article on Workforce on the Duke Executive Leadership Survey it immediately caught my attention.
