Leaders are important. Like, really important. They can make or break how productive, engaged, and happy their employees are. In fact, Gallup reports that managers account for 70% of variance in employee engagement! That makes managers a huge “x factor” in the workplace, and this is all before we’ve talked about their ability to inspire good work, manage their employees’ time, or other essential manager abilities.
For this reason, more and more organizations are adopting “manager onboarding” programs. Not all managers arrive at their position due to people management skills. They often get there based on subject matter expertise, excelling in their previous role or even something as simple as having been with the organization for a long time.
So how can your organization get started setting new leaders up for success? Sharlyn Lauby, President of ITM Group Inc. recently wrote a book called Manager Onboarding: 5 Steps for Setting New Leaders Up for Success, published by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). We loved the book so much that we invited her to give a webinar on the subject!
