Sculling to Success - Aligning Goals for Business Results (Part 2)June 23rd, 2009 |
|
Last week we hosted a webinar in conjunction with the Human Capital Institute (HCI). It was all about organization centric goals, tracking goal linkages and the results from such a process. We called it “Sculling to Success” because, just like in sculling or rowing, the amount of energy, dedication and alignment put into the effort is directly proportional to the results achieved.
Think about it: without understanding how unit goals support organizational goals, and how individual goals link productivity to business goals, you’re just treading water – not getting anywhere. You may have some success from time to time, but your organization isn’t really pulling together.
MetroPCS Wireless is a company that understands the value of linking goals to results. With over 3,400 employees and a 25% growth rate, “getting somewhere” is very important to the company. Metro PCS uses strategic performance management to create a complete “Performance Lifecycle” for its employees. The goal is to move beyond dependence on management feedback and direction to interdependence, wherein clarity and alignment between groups begins to form. Ultimately a drive for continual improvement develops, and employees begin to value performance-enhancing resources such as training. This process is delivered via an ongoing performance management cycle that begins annually with an interactive performance review, setting early goals based on objectives and values, then a mid-year appraisal with input from others, and regular check-ins to ensure ongoing agreement with the goals (and any necessary adjustments.)
This process is a core of MetroPCS’s operations, one that builds on work objectives, development goals and hopes to derive expected behaviors in line with core values.
What do you think? Do you believe that aligning goals with individual performance can produce stronger feelings and overall improved engagement in the workplace? Share your thoughts with us…
