Competency assessment is a vital process that helps evaluate the professional skills necessary to do a job, both initially and in the future. While part of the competency assessment continuum, initial and ongoing competency assessments each have their own distinct purpose.

Initial competency assessments are designed to ensure a new staff member is ready to work independently. Ongoing competency assessments ensure continued competence and currency. Intuitively this distinction seems clear, but many organizations lose sight of it because they’re unsure which competencies to assess initially and on an ongoing basis. The result can be a repetitive process that is a burden dreaded by all, instead of one that develops employees and improves care.

You can learn more about this process in our upcoming webinar on June 1st from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. EDT. This session will feature, Donna Wright, the author of “The Ultimate Guide to Competency Assessment in Healthcare”, who will provide some best practices for initial and ongoing competency assessments, including:

  • How keeping initial and ongoing competency assessments separate can build stronger teams and organizations.
  • The differences between the initial competencies required by new employees and the ongoing competencies that need periodic assessment.
  • How to avoid the trap of assessing the same competencies year after year.

The webinar will also include a brief demonstration of Halogen eAppraisalâ„¢ Healthcare, highlighting how automation can support initial and ongoing competency assessments.
