Highlights from Day One of TalentSpace Live 2017

This is our recap of day one at TalentSpace Live. For our day two recap, click here.

TalentSpace Live, the Halogen customer conference, kicked off yesterday and we have a full recap of day one highlights for you! It’s our first customer conference since September 2015, and we’re excited to connect face-to-face with our customers and partners, and learn together how to bring out the best in people and teams.

After a side-splitting introduction from our emcee Steve Patterson, host of CBC Radio’s The Debaters and all-around funny guy, day one kicked off with a welcome from Halogen CEO, Les Rechan, and Saba CEO, Pervez Qureshi, to provide more details to customers about Saba’s acquisition of Halogen

Les started things off by talking about the work that Halogen is doing to prepare our customers for the future and giving them a platform on which to grow:

He then welcomed Pervez to the stage to say a few words about what the combined power Halogen + Saba brings to both organizations’ customers. Les and Pervez passed on the leadership torch with a fist bump on stage:

Pervez shared with customers what the combination of Saba and Halogen brings – the expertise of the best and brightest minds in talent management, a deep commitment to helping our customers solve new challenges in new ways, and a true passion to deliver value and innovation, better and faster.

He talked about technology trends and their impact on future of work, how the role of HR is evolving as a result, and how together, Halogen and Saba plan to deliver a new vision for talent management. He shared that our focus is to combine people-centric learning, engagement, and performance in new ways to enable organizations to meet their employees on new terms, and transform the employee experience.

The keynote: Patty McCord on reinventing HR

After the welcome from Les and Pervez, workplace innovator, culture and leadership consultant and former Chief Talent Officer at Netflix Patty McCord took the stage to deliver the keynote session. No one in recent history has disrupted the grounds of human resources quite like Patty McCord. Her now infamous Netflix “Culture” slide deck has become a go-to for HR innovators and thinkers around the globe.

Here are a few key takeaways from Patty’s talk…

The rest of the morning

Following a quick break in the south foyer at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Resort, attendees had the opportunity to attend break out sessions that covered everything from strategy to planning to simply getting stuff done. And of course, there was lots of opportunity to network with peers during breaks!

Breakout sessions galore!

After lunch, we launch right back into breakout sessions. Halogen’s Chief People Officer Dominique Jones talked about making employee feedback a part of organizational day-to-day routines.

Sharlyn Lauby, a regular contributor to this here TalentSpace Blog and the author of books and blogs of her own delivered a great session on connecting talent strategy to business strategy.

Back in the TalentSpace Lab

At the same time, we held a number of sessions about how to use TalentSpace better, as well as the ever-popular TalentSpace Lab workshops. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with TalentSpace experts to learn how to increase TalentSpace usage within their organizations, find out more about what’s new in the latest release, and how to leverage the power of feedback anytime, anywhere.

The great HR debate – Be It Resolved

In the afternoon attendees came back to the plenary sessions for the HR Debate with Tim Sackett and Kris Dunn. The two of them “duked it out” on stage sharing differing perspectives on how to address some common and some not-so-common HR and talent management trends and challenges. Their debate covered everything from hugging in the workplace – a good thing or not – to whether employees really want to hear the truth about their performance.

In the end, we had to declare a winner. By audience vote, the winner was: Kris Dunn! As first prize, Kris received $20 US currency. Tim’s runner-up prize was $20 Canadian.
