Coming up on May 19, we’re hosting an exciting webinar with Barb Haag-Heitman, RN, PhD, PHCNS-BC and Vicki George, RN, PhD, FAAN, authors of the new book “Peer Review in Nursing: Principals for Successful Practice”.

The book approaches the definition and implementation strategies for peer reviews within an organizational setting. Using a professional model, with shared governance as a framework, the authors discuss the difference between manger initiated staff performance evaluation of the past and the true peer review aspects of professional practice for the future. This text follows in line with the Magnet program requirement, “that nurses at all levels use self appraisal, performance review and peer review, including annual goal settings, for the assurance of competence and professional development.”

There are multiple tools that help create safer patient environments. Among them, peer reviews are powerful because they give employees authentic performance feedback from someone who does the same job. These peer exchanges drive a culture of quality, learning and practice advancement.

An effective peer review program requires an understanding of peer review principals, plus an understanding of how nurse managers can facilitate the application of these principals in staff nurses and how human resource departments can facilitate the components of a peer review program.

The authors, who have both been involved in healthcare for over 30 years, will discuss the value of implementing performance management best practices including peer reviews, organizational goal alignment and information sharing.

The webinar will include:

  • The six principals of an effective peer review program
  • The role of a manager in a peer program
  • The role of human resources in a peer program
