Employee Self-Evaluations - A Vital Way to Drive Up EngagementJanuary 25th, 2010 |

One important performance management task that often gets overlooked is the employee self-evaluation. In many companies, performance appraisals are still seen as something that “gets done” to employees or something that employees “undergo”. I think this approach is one of the reasons why employees are often disengaged from the process and why performance appraisals are dreaded.
Including employee self-evaluations as part of your performance appraisal process is vital way to empower your employees, and create a more collegial and collaborative culture. Employees are not passive participants in your workplace, so they shouldn’t be passive participants in the evaluation of their work and skills, the creation of development plans to facilitate their growth and the establishment of goals. Giving them an active and important role to play in the performance management process is vital to their engagement in the process as well as in their work overall.
We recently published a reference article entitled Why Are Employee Self-Evaluations So Important? that looks at some of the drivers and benefits of employee self-evaluations. If your organization doesn’t currently encourage employee self-evaluations, you might take a few minutes to read the article.
What do you think? Are there other benefits to employee self-evaluations? Have you encountered any challenges with them?
