Healthcare Spotlight: Lutheran Life Communities Adding the Human Touch to Talent ManagementAugust 28th, 2008 |

Healthcare organizations are faced with a number of unique challenges when it comes to employee performance and talent management. First and foremost, individuals in this field are focused on delivering care to patients, and day-to-day HR tasks such as managing employees and completing reviews may have to take a back seat.
One of the keys to successful talent management for healthcare organizations is ensuring that any program or solution takes into account the climate in which healthcare workers operate. Something that adds extra work and complexity and doesn’t address things like compliance and shift work, isn’t going to get the job done. I wanted to share with you the story of how one healthcare organization, Illinois-based Lutheran Life Communities was able to use talent management to reinforce its culture, while enabling HR to focus on strategic programs.
Lutheran Life Communities delivers respected and innovative care to hundreds of thousands of individuals and provides a variety of services including residential care, adult day programs, in-home services, childcare and pastoral care. The organization is dedicated to creating a compassionate environment, but their existing paper-based appraisal system trapped managers in administration, taking time away from relationship-building conversations about performance with employees.
The organization selected a healthcare-specific talent management solution for its ease of use, and its ability to scale as the organization grows over time. Since rolling out the system to its 1,500 employees across its six sites, Lutheran Life Communities has achieved consistency and time savings, while creating a culture where employees are thinking about their performance and personal development on a daily basis. Managers have been able to save time executing performance appraisals and there is now consistency in the appraisal process across all six sites.
One of the organization’s greatest successes has been creating an employee performance management process that mirrors the organization’s mandate and working environment. As Susan Clapper, Lutheran Life Communities’ HR Consultant explains, “Lutheran Life Communities is a special environment that focuses closely on the human side of things, and is very much a family. We now have an approach to performance management that is a fit with our values and enables everyone to focus on relationships between employees and most importantly with our residents and their families.”
After working in the technology industry for so many years, I love to hear a story about how a solution did more than just streamline things or save money, but how technology is having a positive impact on people’s lives.
