This month’s HR Magazine (http://www.shrm.org/Publications/hrmagazine/Pages/default.aspx) has a big section on generation Y, which is definitely worth a read. One particularly interesting article is The Tethered Generation which looks at the role of technology with the millennial generation.

There are two key points in the article that apply to employee performance and talent management as I see it. Millennials are incredibly techno-savvy, which means they will be expecting, and possibly demanding systems that offer ongoing value. Think about it. If your organization has a high number of millennials, how well will a paper-based process for performance appraisals or compensation management be received? Employee enthusiasm for and engagement in this is apt to be low, which can contribute to dissatisfaction and retention issues in the longer term.

Another great point in the article is about millennial expectations around goal-setting and planning, and how they may find them unrealistic or unattainable. A solid and structured appraisal process that properly aligns and helps track and align organization and employee goals can help build confidence in an organization and help manage employee expectations in the short and longer term.

With the current skills shortage, and retiring workforce, the importance of millennials shouldn’t be overlooked. They are our future managers and executives, and HR should take the time now to assess how we can best meet this group’s needs moving ahead.
